The History

joseph pilates (1885-1967) devoted his lifetime to
creating Pilates. Due to chronic illnesses as a child
he studied the structural function of the human body,
Zen, Yoga and ancient Greek and Roman regimes.

Born near Düssseldorf, Germany he worked so intensely
that by the age of fourteen was posing for anatomical
charts along side skiing, diving and gymnastics. In 1912
he left for England to become a boxer, when World War I
broke out and he was interned. Here is where he trained
his fellow inmates, none of which were affected by the
devastating influenza which swept through the country
killing thousands- a claim of how effective the method is.
During this time the prototypes of the original apparatus
were created out of hospital beds. By attaching springs
he aided and sped up the wounded soldiers recovery
time.
